Hey guys! This is the fifth video message. It covers two topics. As you see in the title it covers the Camera and the Camps. It is a short five minute video. I have to say I love our new camera & I think you big time video guys will too (I am looking at you Zach). I did not mind this investment into the club due to how much I think these videos can be a really good tool for us to use. We can do reviews, video messages like these, and other great ideas. In the future I think I will only allow a few people to do the videos. I think it just ends up with a cleaner lo0k then having 5 or 6 students up there. Anyway enjoy and I can’t wait to see you guys use this too.

Hello,

I thought I would share with you a order I placed today to get some more games for our club!

I picked up three copies of Perikles which sounds like a great game. It is a mix of politics & military. Read what is printed on that back of the box.

“Together the Greek City States had defeated the greatest power in the world, the Persians. Now, though, pride and envy have led them to fight amongst themselves in what we know today as the Peloponnesian War.

Each player represents a powerful Greek family with political influence spread across the six major city states of ancient Greece. Players strive to become leaders of these cities, thus taking control of their military forces. With these forces players will aim to win glory on the battlefield.”

Perikles, 3-5 player, 120 minutes

Next one I ordered was Hellas. I ordered only one copy to try it out. If it goes well I would like to pick up a few more. Here is what it says on the back of the box:

“In the land of ancient Greece, called Hellas, the people waged power struggles for control of the many valuable islands. The combatants faced each other over land and across the seas. In these battles with sail and sword, the combatants venture forth to discover new islands to fight over. To aid them in their battles, the combatants often seek the favor of the Gods.”

Hellas, 2-2 player, 60 minutes

The next order I picked up was for a crazy game called Eketorp. You are a band of vikings who are battling each other for supplies to build the best castle. The game is unique and a good time. I have played this one already and knew it to be refreshingly different.

Eketorp, 3-6 players, 60 minutes

The next game I picked up cause it sounded cool and tactical. It is called Feudo. This is a game that is based in middevil Europe. Players are trying to take control of land and castles. Much like chess they all have similar pieces and when one dies it is out of the game for good. Here is what the back of the box says:

“In the year 1265 A.D., England’s most powerful Barons clashed to contend the precious lands of the manor of Evesham. The outcome of this battle depends on your strategy. Will you make use of the charm of your Milady or will you go to the Convent? No one knows what moves you will make. Be careful of the fog and keep away from the plague. Play your shillings and strike the enemy where he least expects it. But if you become the strongest Baron, King Henry III will also join the struggle, and winning will be even harder.”

Feudo, 2-4 players, 90 minutes

The last game I picked up was El Grande. This is a great game that we already have one copy of. I have started to teach a few people the game and it has been going really well. They seemed to really enjoy the game so I thought I would order another one. I still would like to pick up one or two more but all in due time. For those who have not played this one yet here is the description from the back of the box:

“In this award-winning game, players take on the roles of Grandes in medieval Spain. The king’s power is flagging, and these powerful lords are vying for control of the various provinces. To that end, you draft caballeros (knights) into your court and subsequently move them onto the board to help seize control of provinces. After every third turn, the regions are scored, and after the ninth turn, the Grande with the most points is deemed the winner.”

El Grande, 2-5 players, 90 minutes

I am looking forward to teaching these games in future game clubs. There are so many more games to learn and I am looking for those who are my dedicated soldiers who are ready to learn & have fun!

Thanks much for all your support to the Game club this year.

Welcome back all you treasure hunters. I am sending you a little different mission this time. This time you are looking for a word printed in a color somewhere on the site (see example below). The first three students to find it will get gold rewards.

SAMPLE

Good luck to all the hunters. I hope to have a quick race. This time I will give out more cash the faster it gets found. So for example if someone finds it today they would get much more gold then the person that finds it in 10 days.

If you’re new at this I will tell you how this works. You don’t want to post the answer here. You want to message me on Thirdfloorgamers.com the answer. In this case you want to tell me the page it was found on and the word/letter that was colored. Good luck!

I will post who found it here and how much gold they received here in this post.

Happy hunting!

Mr. Matera

People who found it & their treasure amounts!

Minhal: 150 (found it within 2 hours of posting) WOW!
Zach: 75
Max L: 50

And we are done. Nice work guys

Hello all!

I am very excited to report that we will be starting a new game of online werewolf, albeit a different theme. This is called Corporate Take Over. The idea of the game is similar to Werewolf. Your team is trying to be the last one standing. It will be broken down into a day and night phase, however no one person will have the night time roles. In this exciting Online werewolf you will be on one of the bank teams. There will be three teams of four. Each person will get $100 to start with and they will be spending it in the night auctions. The “role” of the werewolf will be bid on by people and they will then spend the money to kill someone on another team (hopefully). In the day time your money will be used (but not spent) to determine how strong your vote is. If you have 100 dollars your vote is worth 100, but if you have spent some on night roles, and won the bid, you will have a less powerful vote.

Teams:

Chase Manhattan

Bank of America

Citi Bank

Night Roles (Not up for bidding)

Head Hunter: Each team will start the game with one Head Hunter. This person is like the seer in werewolf. They are able to see who works for who. Each night they will tell me who they want to see and I will reveal which bank they work for.

Night Roles & Tools (up for bidding)

Assassin: (werewolf) Each night that this role is won, the winner will get to select someone to kill. Choose wisely, as you will not know who is on which team.

Hacker: Each night that this role is won, the winner will get to select someone to steal 25% of their money from their account by hacking into their personal account.

Director of HR – Each night that this role is won, the winner, will get to select someone and find out if they work for the same bank.

Federal Trade Commission Officer: Each night that this role is won, the winner, will get to select someone and freeze his or her accounts for an entire day (which means no votes during the day) ‘

HOW TO SIGN UP!

I hope to see many of you apply to get into this re-themed werewolf. I would only like students who are going to be active to participate. Your team will need you and you must be willing to log in each day and make some posts and cast your vote. If this sounds like it interests you please sign up below. Remember this is a commitment. I expect you to play if you sign up.

Hello to all gamers, and those members of thirdfloorgamers. In this website reminder, I would like to bring up a topic that has, well, not been talked about. Groups. Here at thirdfloorgamers, as many of you know, members have the ability to create a group of people that can be themed, or be just a group in general. They may invite members to the group, and talk amongst themselves in the group. The reason I am bringing this up is quite simple: Nobody uses them very much. Sure, there is some positive talk from a few days after the group began, but after that, its few and far between. Not to say we should get rid of these groups, but when you are in a group, particularly if you are the leader, you are supposed to talk to the other members. Currently thirdfloorgamers has around 15 groups. Almost half have never even been talked in. I am a member of most of game club’s groups, and I have never seen any form of conversation between members. To keep it simple, what I am trying to say is, if you create a group, talk in it! And if you are in a group, check the conversations! Add to them! Talk about games, strategies, etc. Just don’t create senseless groups that you never use. For example, I was looking through the groups on our website, and found that there are two groups that are both generally titled: Fans of Werewolf. I looked into both, and have seen no activity whatsoever. And I am not saying this hasn’t happened to me either. I created a group, and since then, there has been little to no conversation. Talking in groups would be great for our website. I just wanted to bring this up. And also:
Happy gaming to all!

Today was a very special day in the game club community. This is because today game club allowed 5th graders to participate in the fun and excitement of gaming! Many came to test out the club and decide if they would come in 6th grade. 6th graders taught the 5th graders how to play the games, and we all had a blast! There were 5 tables set up, three with castle panic and two with revolution. One of the castle panic tables ended up being unused though. I was at a table playing castle panic! I was playing with Aaron, Andy, Dylan, Chris, and a 5th grader. In castle panic the goal is to defend your castle with the other players and work together to defeat the oncoming monsters, without getting your castle destroyed. Our game was super exciting! At the beginning we were doing pretty well, and we kept the monsters at bay. But slowly, agonizingly, our defenses began to crumble. Walls were broken down, towers demolished, as we struggled to keep our fort. This continued until we had only 1 tower left!! The monsters were still pouring in, faster than ever! Soon it was clear that we were going to lose. Two monsters had entered the castle ring, directly next to our sole remaining tower!! 1 more turn, and it was all over. It was my turn. My face was doused in sweat, and I racked my nervous brain for a solution. The fate of the castle rested in my hands! (not to be dramatic!) I had three cards, and the ability to draw one to replenish my hand. The 5th grader next to me had a scavenge card, but it was useless because the deck had just been reshuffled, and there was nothing in the discard pile. Slowly, apprehensive of my own doom, and that of my fellows, I flipped over the top card which was….A BARBARIAN!!!!! I was saved! What followed was probably the biggest stroke of luck ever to occur in game club! (again, not to be dramatic!) I played my barbarian card, and it was thrown in the discard pile. Then I traded the 5th grader for his scavenge card, played it, and recovered the barbarian! I then used it again for a second kill! Thus forth, the two threatening monsters in the castle ring were slaughtered! We were saved! But the game wasn’t over yet! Our monster pile seemed endless, and we still had only 1 remaining tower! But we were in luck! Our cards favored us, and we successfully came back, killing all the monsters in our path! And finally, the pile was reduced to zero!! we had won!! With a truckload of luck, and some masterful planning by everyone, we had overcome the monsters and defended our castle!! Woohoo!

After this, we played a second game which was entirely uneventful. Before we could really get into the game, we had to stop and pack up. Was game club over? NO! It was time for, the one, the only, WEREWOLF!!!!! With our massive amount of people, we gathered in to collect our roles and start the chaos! it was another great time! First, it seemed as if the werewolves were going to win, as villagers were killed left and right. (I was the first to die! Boohoo!) But eventually the werewolves were found and voted out of town! Soon there was only 1 elusive wolf left to find! He killed a few more innocents, when finally, he was rooted out from the crowd, and killed! The villagers prevailed! Then game club was over, but everyone had a blast, just like always!

Pitchcar is the game of flicking “race cars” around a track twice trying to come out victorious. The race starts with a jump. The jump is very hard because to make because you need to land on the other side. You could get not enough force and land in the middle of the jump or too much and fly off the table. After you make it over the first jump there is the first turn and a second jump. This one is easier right? Wrong! It is just as hard. If you can make it over that you have a turn that goes for some weird little curves. This area is pretty challenging because there is only one railing per curve. If you ride it the wrong way you will surely fall off. If you survive the curves there is one last turn and then the straight away (unless your on your first lap then go around again). The straight away seems so close and yet so far. If the force you flick the race car is too fast you will go off the jump for the third time and have to wait until your next turn to finish. It is a very fun and challenging game, but very easy to understand. On amazon.com it sells for $54.99 though prices may vary. Also their are some expansions with different tracks. Their is even a Pitchcar Mini. Here is a link to a video of some people playing Pitchcar Mini. Go have fun playing Pitchcar and as always Happy Gaming.

Last Thursday I learned a completely new game called “Chicago Express” ( I think). This is a first for me because I don’t learn new games very often. For the past 3 out of four times I’ve been to the “Third Floor” I have played Stone Age which was my favorite game. Chicago Express was a blast. It is a completely economical game. You buy stocks in train stations and use their money to buy more railroads for them to travel. The whole point of the game is to get to Chicago because then you can buy black trains and get a free dividends phase. There is a map which contains three terrains which are: Mountains, Trees, and Plains. Plains are the easiest and cost the least amount of $. You can put as many trains on plains that you want ( hey that rhymes!). Trees are tough. You can only put one train on a tree square ( or is it a hexagon?) at a time. Mountains cost the most. You can only put one train on a mountain hexagon at a time. In this game I started out being the only person with green ( a smart choice). Mr. Matera and a fifth grader had red (good choice). Julian had blue ( bad choice). And a different fifth grader had yellow( very bad choice). For a while I was working silently cutting around the action through the plains minding my own business while Mr. Matera and red was busting down the trees to get to Chicago. Mr. Matera joined aliences with me. He bought a stock in green and ditched red. I got to Chicago second behind red. Red got their dividends phase and got some extra mola. When I got their I had a plan that others would not see. I would buy the first black railroads and own it all to myself so I wouldn’t have to share any of the profit. I immediately went to Chicago with black so I could get another free dividends phase. With nobody else collecting I earned about $35 on that one turn. When the game ended Mr. Matera was in first with $177 I was in second with $79 a fifth grader came in third with $63 Julian came in fourth with $25 and the other fifth grader came in last with $18. I love economic games. I love strategy games. Can it possibly get any better? I think not. This game is officially “Da Bomb”

I haven’t posted in a while, and I recently played For Sale, while Zach and I were learning about it for a video review, so I decided this would be a great time to make a new post.

Anyways, on to the game. For Sale, is a light filler-strategy game which involves buying and selling different properties. We started the game with 2200 dollar tokens, which you use to buy different properties. There are also two decks of cards, one with the numbered properties in it, and the latter with checks of varying sizes in it. There are two phases to this game; one where you can buy properties, and another where you sell the properties for checks, which are used at the end of the game to determine who the winner is.

You start the game by flipping up 3 property cards, and then going around and placing bets on it, or freely taking the lowest card. The cards go around until all of them have been taken. For example, if there was a 3, 8, and 17 on the table. The first player could freely take the 3, or bid tokens to vie for the top card. If one player took the 3, another player could take the next lowest available card, the 8, or bid more token to go for the 17. You repeated this until all the cards were gone.

Next you moved onto the check phase. Each player has the same number of properties, and you bid the properties for different checks which ranged from 0 to 15,000. After you have auctioned off all the properties for checks, you counted out your score, and the person with the highest points was the victor.

When we played our game, there were only 3 players. Zach, Mr. Matera, and myself. It was my first time, and I carelessly wasted my money earlier on, and was empty later on when the better properties came out, and was forced to take the terrible cards, such as a 1 or 2, while Mr. Matera picked up cards in the higher 20s. The game continued in the same fashion in the second phase. Mr. Matera easily came in first with an astonishing 100 points, with Zach in second with 79. I came in last. (How did you guess?) with only 69 points.

For Sale is a great game and I really enjoyed playing it. Hopefully the video review will be on the site by the end of next week.
