1st Game Night!

I am please to announce that today we had our first game night of the year and it was a successful one at that. We had two games being played. On one table we had a rousing game of Settlers of Catan and on the other we had a Revolution! Settlers of Catan is one of my favorate games. It was my “gateway game”. Gateway games are games get non-gamers into this new world of Euro-games. Euro-games are the new style of boardgames coming out of Europe. The new style of games are ones that rely less on luck and more on long term and short term planning. Ok I will just say it. It involves more on strategy. Settlers is a great game that can suck about any person in gaming. It is a fast paced trading game where you are building up your fledgling colony. You produce some of the recources you need to create a larger community. However your fellow competetoros on the island of Catan are also building up their coloneys. They too make produces that you do not. You all need each other. It is a race to develop Catan. Tonight, we had three new comers to the game. Private, Charlies, Shiva, and Mark. Against Staff Sergeant Andrew. This is Andrew second year in the Historical Game club. He is one of the best. He...

A New Year & New Look

Welcome to Historical Game Clubs second year running at USM. This year there has been some changes. First off, there is this new site. Second, the way the club is structured is a little different. Lastly, I hope that this year we can improve on what we give back to the gaming community (more on this later). Lets start with the new site. This site is the combined work of Mr. Matera and Mr. Wilson. The general idea is to have a place to discuss games and share are love of gaming. We hope to have students, and teachers add some content such as articles for reviews, podcasts, and videocast. The site is pretty robust. Create an account with Thirdfloorgamers and you can begin to explore the site to its fullest. To create an account and take advantage of this site you must be in Historical Game club or have attended one of Mr. Wilson’s or Mr. Matera’s summer camps (more to come on these). Next lets talk about how the club is different.  First off I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to are few supporters last year who donated some money to help us build up a successful club. Truth be told that was not enough funds to keep the club a float. Mr. Matera, spent over $2000 dollars of his own money to...

Revolution!

Today I opened a new game that I purchased for my collection. Revolution! This is a game that looks just wonderful to me.  It is for 2-4 players and should only take 40 – 60 minutes to play. The game is published by Steve Jackson Games. What is Revolution? – Summary Revolution is a simultaneous bidding and area control game by Philip duBarry. Three to four players find themselves in the midst of a revolutioni and must use a combination of force, blackmail and bribes to ensure that when the dust settles, they’re on top. Although the duration is listed at one hour, my wife and I, as well as Mr. Wilson and his wife finished around 40 minutes. Designer: Philip duBarry Publisher: Steve Jackson Games # of Players: 3-4 Duration: 45 – 60 minutes Weight: Light (maybe a gateway game) Mechanics: Simultaneous Bidding, Area Control What do you do and How do you do it? – Rules and Gameplay Each round consists of four phases: Espionage, Bidding, Resolution and Patronage. Espionage: Turns begin with all players sharing what assortment of bidding tokens they earned the previous round. This information is especially important because it allows the players to know which other players are a bidding threat or if any players can guarantee a space. Disregard this information at your own peril! On the first round, each player begins...
